gogreenAs a part of our ongoing process, Charlotte Dentistry® continues to look for ways to make our business greener and more sustainable. We look for ways to better care for our world, we’re not just caring for our patients’ teeth – we’re caring and preparing for the generations to come.

Many businesses have taken advantage of electronics to reduce the need for as much paper and to speed up operations.  Dentistry is also working toward “chartless” operations.  There are many benefits to this—both for the environment and for patients.

Electronic storage of patient records makes it easier for dental professionals to access key information and determine the best patient treatments.  It also allows for easier record updates and it dramatically reduces the space required for records—a single patient record can contain dozens of pages.

Electronics also speed up information gathering and allow us to treat patients with fewer delays.  Charlotte Dentistry® offers patients the option to schedule appointments online through our website for speed and convenience, and we access their records electronically so everything’s ready when they arrive at the office.  New patients can download forms at home, complete the forms before coming to their appointment —not completely paperless, but it still speeds up the process.  Patients can also email the completed form to the office prior to their arrival.

And for dentists, digital isn’t just about paper.  Digital x-ray technology eliminates the need to process and store x-ray films.  Digital x-rays also expose patients to a fraction of the radiation of old technologies, and, since digital images are easier to understand than film, they make it simpler for patients to choose treatment options as the dentist explains them.  Digital x-ray images can also be transferred immediately to other dental offices in case of a referral—or an emergency.

The dental industry is continually changing, and Charlotte Dentistry has always been a leader in bringing in new technologies that offer benefits to our patients.  Learn more on our website—you can even use the “Ask the Expert” feature to get specific details if you’d like.

Invisalign Elite TOP 1%Taquana “Tabby” Sears: My Invisalign® Ride: And The Ride Goes On. . .

Taquana “Tabby” Sears, a Charlotte Dentistry® patient, has agreed to share her Invisalign experience with us on a regular basis. For the last several months, she’s given us reports on how she’s doing with Invisalign® invisible braces, including ups and downs. Below is her latest blog entry.

At last weeks visit, I picked up trays 7-9. HOPEFULLY these are the last trays to complete my Invisalign journey. The one stubborn tooth has finally begun to move and make some real progress! I can definitely see the positioning of this tooth improving.

This has been an incredible ride. People who don’t know I have been wearing Invisalign still can’t tell. I constantly get compliments on my smile!
People always ask, “Who IS your dentist?” I proudly say with my new smile beaming – “Dr. Armstrong at Charlotte Dentistry is MY dentist and I love what he and Invisalign have accomplished with my smile!”

Since I’m an adult working in the Charlotte corporate scene, I know Invisalign was definitely the right choice for me as opposed to non-removable braces. I can conduct meetings without my braces being a distraction. Also, Invisalign doesn’t cut or scrap lips, gum and inside of your cheeks as wire braces tend to do.
This entire journey has been with almost NO discomfort. Yes, in the beginning, there were times when I experienced a good amount of tightness. This was typically on the first day I changed out to a new tray. However, the next day, all was fine again. The tightness would decrease and I was totally fine! No complaints from me. I am thoroughly pleased with the results I have today. Looking forward to continuing life with my new beautiful smile!

Thinking about getting Invisalign? Drop me line. I would be glad to answer any questions you may have.

I am pleased to say I picked up my last 3 trays during my last dental visit.  So, my 18-month Invisalign® ride is coming into the home stretch. It looks like I have just about 6 weeks left!

This has been an incredible ride! It has been a joy seeing my smile change with each set of trays. I’m so pleased when I look in the mirror at how straight my smile has become.

Through this journey, I’ve learned some valuable things about my teeth and myself.  I’ve learned to be disciplined in my choices.  No matter how much I wanted to remove my trays during the day, remembering they’re not working if they’re not in my mouth, made me more willing to keep them in my mouth as much as possible!  AND the results show that it does work.

I’ve learned to make healthier, smarter choices about the foods I eat.  I hardly ever snack on “junk food” during the day. The sugary beverages are gone. Did you realize that drinking a soft drink was the equivalent of giving your teeth a sugar bath?!? The Invisalign® trays fit snugly so it’s very important to stay away from sugary snacks and drinks. No one wants cavities!

As I move thru these last 3 trays, I feel really good about my smile and what Invisalign® and Charlotte Dentistry® has accomplished for me. Remember, follow the instructions and you can’t go wrong!

At this week’s dental visit, I picked up refinement trays four through six.  These trays are the “fine point-finishing touch” trays to my treatment. This set has a total of nine trays, so I will be picking up the last trays at my next visit.

My predicted Invisalign® journey was to be 18 months. If all goes well, my journey will be completed in 15 months. I guess hard work really does pays off!

I have been diligent about wearing my trays at least 20 hours per day.  I always say, the trays will not work if they are not in your mouth—so wear them as often as you can.

I will say this: these refinement trays have been a breeze. I have had little to no discomfort when changing trays. They are a little tight, but definitely not unbearable. I pray my next few trays are the same way.

So, my treatment time is moving right along! My teeth are moving better than predicted. And provided my teeth keep moving as we would like, I could be done by mid-May!

And, when I look in the mirror I’m really pleased with the smile looking back as me. I can’t wait to see my “finished” smile!

Please continue to follow my 18 month Invisalign® ride! I’ve learned a lot about myself and my teeth and INVISALIGN®. Got questions? Send them my way for a quick reply.

The teenage years can be very trying for lots of reasons.  And for many teenagers, the roller coaster ride of emotions, new experiences, and school mean that good dental health practicesYoung Peolpe get neglected.

In this high-tech fast paced world teens are busier than ever! And sometimes brushing can be overlooked. We all love junk foods but some teens can be notorious consumers of it—which creates a “perfect storm” type of environment inside their mouths for tooth problems.  If a GOOD brushing and flossing routine is not maintained,  it’s not surprising that teenagers have high instances of cavities.

But as a parent, you find yourself more limited in how much you can bug your teen about brushing—natural rebellion may make them LESS likely to brush should you bring it up.  However, there are still some things you can do to help your young adult keep a good smile.

  1. Set a good example yourself.  If you’re going the extra mile, your teen can’t push back too hard when you offer reminders.
  2. Make it extra convenient.  Keep extra brushes around (teenagers lose a LOT of stuff, including toothbrushes).  If your family is really on the go, it might be wise to keep duplicate brushes in all the bathrooms maybe even in the kitchen. That was they are always on hand.
  3. Control the junk food.  You can’t stop it all, but you can make sure snacks at home are nutritious and tooth-healthy. Need some ideas for some tasty snacks? Check out these GREAT suggestions by clicking  HERE.
  4. Point out that your teen isn’t just brushing for himself/herself.  Brushing is really for that girl or boy they’d like to meet.  You might be surprised at how quickly your young man or woman reaches for a brush and floss.

Ranked In The Top 1% Of ALL Providers In NORTH AMERICA

Since 2007, Charlotte Dentistry® has held a unique distinction among practices offering Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen®— designated an Invisalign® Elite Preferred Provider.  In 2012, Charlotte DentistInvisalign® Top 1%ry® is ranked among the Top 1% of All providers in North America—the Only office in the Carolinas to earn this ranking.

Being recognized in the Top 1% is Truly an honor for us, and it shows the dedication of our dental professionals to providing the best care possible. Having treated more than 2,000 Invisalign® patients and even more traditional braces patients speaks volumes for the level of expertise provided to our patients.

Is Invisalign® Right For You, Or For A Family Member?

The Invisalign® system provides a series of clear plastic “trays” that are worn over the teeth.  The system is virtually invisible, and can be removed for cleaning or eating.  Trays are switched out at intervals, with each tray gradually moving teeth to the desired position.

Invisalign® works for more and more people, but there are still situations where certain patients can benefit more from traditional metal braces.  Charlotte Dentistry® works with each patient to choose the treatment path that offers the best results.

A Continually Improving Technology

Recent technology advancements have made Invisalign® technology even more effective.  Trays can now be more customized to move your teeth in the proper direction with the use of “attachments,” which are temporarily tooth-colored “buttons” bonded to teeth that require more rotation or movement than others.  And other improvements have helped make Invisalign® more comfortable and easier to use.  (This is where our experience plays a big role—we can help you utilize these advancements to create the optimum program for making your smile the best it can possibly be)

Invisalign “invisible” braces continue to grow in popularity, and more dental professionals are offering them as part of their practices. But for dentists who don’t have much experience with the Invisalign system, there’s a tendency to shift patients to traditional metal braces if they don’t think Invisalign can work.

This doesn’t have to be the case. If you’ve heard “you’re not a candidate,” you might want to seek a “free second opinion” from the most experienced Invisalign provider in the Southeast!

While there are some patients who will see better results from traditional braces (see our post on Erin Queen), there are many more cases where Invisalign can provide excellent results–if your dentist has the experience to properly administer Invisalign treatment.

Charlotte Dentistry and Dr. Thomas W. Armstrong are the first and only Charlotte area dentists to achieve top honors for Invisalign orthodontics. Having treated more 1600 patients with Invisalign, Dr. Armstrong is the most experienced Invisalign provider in North Carolina. Patients from all over the country seek his expertise, and dentists interested in offering Invisalign, consult with him to learn how to strengthen their skills.

It’s also important to remember that Invisalign is a breakthrough technology, but it still requires consistent work from the patient to be successful. The Invisalign clear plastic trays are designed to slide over your teeth and slowly begin to move your teeth. As you change the trays every few weeks, your teeth begin to be repositioned to close gaps, turn teeth and give you a beautiful smile.

Invisalign braces are almost invisible so they are easy to forget. Be consistent, always replace them immediately after eating and brushing. If you experience discomfort, you’ll notice the more you wear the trays the less your discomfort!

Remember to brush both your teeth and your trays to avoid plaque buildup. Keep the trays in place as much as possible to ensure the best, fastest results!

Meet Erin Queen.  Erin was the lucky winner of our 2009 Faith, Family, Freedom Invisalign giveaway contest, in which she won totally free treatment from Charlotte Dentistry – a Smile Makeover with Invisalign Technology.

However, there were unexpected challenges found during Erin’s initial Invisalign exam.  She had some impacted teeth that would need traditional braces to pull them down and allow room for proper placement.  Dr. Armstrong discussed the pros and cons of traditional braces, and he and Erin agreed on the traditonal treatment for her SMILE Makeover.

At Charlotte Dentistry, it IS all about what’s best for each individual patient.

The results have been dramatic.  You must agree that Erin’s smile is gorgeous!  Erin has just completed her two-year treatment, and her teeth are straight and bright white! Erin has been given a complete Smile Makeover compliments of Charlotte Dentistry and Dr. Thomas Armstrong, DMD.

At Charlotte Dentistry our patients enjoy the significant advantage of having dentists and staff with years of experience treating even the most difficult cases whether the case is orthodontic, cosmetic or restorative.  The patient’s best interest is the focus.

Dr. Armstrong, for example, has more than 28 years of success in cosmetic dentistry and treating conditions like TMJ as well as 30 years orthodontic experience combined with 5 years Invisalign expertise.   In cases like Erin’s, when several treatment options may be available, this experience can be the key to helping our patients choose the treatment that is going to be the absolute best for them.

Your teeth can become discolored for many reasons, from slight injury or affects of medication.  Fortunately, there are now a number of options for bringing your smile back to bright white.

Teeth Whitening treatments can be a starting point.  Charlotte Dentistry offers two professional whitening approaches – Zoom!, an in-office treatment, and Sheer White, a treatment you can do at home.

The Zoom! whitening method is one of the most efficient ways to get a bright, white smile.  Zoom! works in 60 minutes and last longer than at home whitening treatments, depending on your eating or drinking habits.  Zoom! has been proven to whiten teeth as much as 6-8 shades with just one treatment.

If you’d prefer a whitening treatment you can do at home, then we offer Sheer White.  Sheer White uses thin, flexible films that apply easily and mold to your teeth, staying in place.  This film molds tightly and applies the whitening agent directly to the surface of the tooth, unlike over-the-counter treatments that can wash out or leak.  Both systems are fast, painless, and a great way to get good results.

If whitening treatments do not produce the results desired, then tooth veneers can be an effective option.  Veneers are almost impossible to stain.  Porcelain veneers have the same luster of your natural tooth enamel, so people may never know you’ve had them applied.  And they provide essentially instant results.

Precise custom craftsmanship of tooth veneers is a must.  Our on-site dental lab allows us to provide the most accurate coloring, shaping and fit for your veneers.  And should the dentist think a last-second adjustment is needed before they are applied, this can be done, without having to wait for the veneer to be shipped to and returned from a distant lab.

To learn more about your options for fixing discolored teeth, call us for an appointment.

Taquana “Tabby” Sears, a Charlotte Dentistry patient, has agreed to share her Invisalign experience with us on a regular basis.  For the last several months, she’s given us reports on how she’s doing with Invisalign, including ups and downs.  Below is her latest blog entry.

Last month I mentioned that I didn’t have an upper tray for #12.  In addition to not having an upper tray, my lower tray was extremely thin.  I’m not sure why it was so thin.  I’m so used to my bottom trays being difficult to put on.  These, however, popped right in.  It was so thin, it even started to crack during the 2 weeks wearing them.  Needless to say I was excited about getting new trays during my next visit.  So you know what that means…new trays equals tightness!  Since I have been wearing the same upper trays for 4 weeks, and my bottom trays weren’t tight at all, these new trays are a little uncomfortable.  I guess since my teeth haven’t moved in a few weeks, they’re a little stubborn!

This visit, I picked up trays 13-15.  During this visit, 4 more attachments were added.  Attachments are little tooth-colored “buttons” to help the trays grip your teeth.  They also assist the more difficult teeth to rotate the right way.  Now I have a total of 12 attachments.  It feels strange if you’re not used to them. However, you don’t feel them at all if your trays are in.  Also during this visit, updated pictures were taken.  So please stay tuned!  They should be posted soon!

Before I started this journey, I used to cover my mouth every time I smiled or laughed.  Now I’m proud to say, I no longer cover my mouth.  In these short 5 months, I smile with confidence.  I’m even comfortable with showing people my “before” pictures.  Everyone who sees my before pictures are amazed at my progress.  I definitely recommend Invisalign for anyone wanting to strengthen their teeth!  You get a beautiful smile without the hassle of metal wires and rubber bands!

Please continue to follow my 18-month Invisalign ride.  I will be glad to answer any questions you may have.
